Nelson Mandela was a leader who fought for freedom and equality in South Africa. He spent many years in prison for standing up against unfair laws that treated Black people badly. After his release, he became the first Black president of South Africa and worked to bring people together. Dominique Dawes is a famous gymnast who made history as part of the 'Magnificent Seven' — the U.S. gymnastics team that won gold at the 1996 Olympics! She was the first African American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in gymnastics and inspired many with her hard work, dedication, and grace. Ray Charles was an amazing musician who created beautiful music by combining jazz, blues, and gospel. Even though he lost his eyesight at a young age, Ray didn’t let that stop him. He became known as 'The Genius' because of his incredible talent and made some of the most memorable songs ever, like 'Georgia on My Mind.' Dr. Mae Jemison is a female astronaut and the first African American woman to travel to space! How cool is that!? She worked on NASA's Space Shuttle Endeavour and has inspired many to dream big and reach for the stars. Before becoming an astronaut, Mae was also a doctor and engineer. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a leader who fought for equal rights for all people. He is best known for his role in the Civil Rights Movement, where he led peaceful protests to end segregation and racism. His famous 'I Have a Dream' speech inspired millions and showed the power of love and nonviolence. Dr. King’s courage and dream of a better world still inspire people today. #BlackHistoryatHawthorne
Venus and Serena Williams are two of the greatest tennis players of all time! They have won many Grand Slam titles and are known for their powerful games and strong sisterly bond. Venus broke barriers in tennis by becoming one of the first Black women to reach the top of the sport, and Serena went on to become one of the most successful athletes in history. John Lewis was a brave leader in the Civil Rights Movement who fought for equal rights for all people. As a young man, he helped lead the famous march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, where he was hurt because of his beliefs, but he never gave up. Harriet Tubman was an incredible woman who helped free many enslaved people through the Underground Railroad. She risked her life to guide people to freedom and never gave up, even when faced with great danger. Harriet is another influential person with a connection to Miss Friedman's hometown! Tubman played a key role in Rochester, NY, where she lived for many years and continued her work as an advocate for freedom and women’s rights. Miss Friedman has even had the opportunity to visit her home!
Barack and Michelle Obama are an inspiring couple who made history. Barack became the first African American president of the United States, and Michelle was the first lady who worked to improve education, health, and equality. Together, they showed that with hard work and determination, anyone can make a difference.
